I must admit that to a certain extent, I do admire Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi. He has the capacity to outshine even my favourite actor Robert De Niro in the acting profession. I have no reason to doubt that if Prime Ministers were regaled with an Oscar, the Hon Lawrence Gonzi would win hands down. With a poker-faced attitude he dares to appear on last Friday’s (5 November) Xarabank to tell us as he did on Budget day that Malta’s deficit is being controlled and he is on the right track.
What the Prime Minister failed to tell us is that if the deficit is no longer of a gigantic proportion, it is all due to the taxes that have been imposed on us time after time after time. What does the Prime Minister expect the people’s reaction to be after this statement when it was the Nationalists themselves who created this deficit in the first place? Does he want a medal or does he think he deserves the Nobel Prize?
Through Malta’s history nobody can deny the fact that the Labour Party had no deficit as a label. Truth be told, the Nationalists always “had it good” after the Labour Party failed to govern. The same cannot be said for the Labour party.
The wasting of money was always on the top of the PN’s agenda. What comes to mind is spending Lm17,000 on a clock at St Vincent De Paule hospital a few years back. Recently more salt into the wound was the Lm10 million spend on mobile phones, journeys abroad and parties for the guys and dolls who follow the blues. The Maltese have a saying “Min hu mejjet fis-sakra u min hu mejjet ghal qatra.” The people on the dole, the pensioners who find no medicines available at St Luke’s Hospital, the Lower class wage earned certainly is “mejjet ghal qatra”. But as long as the deficit is being controlled, everything is all right for dear Lawrence even though part one of the budget literally has lampooned us all with the New introduced measures on the water and electricity rates.
One thing’s for sure, if one dares to vote PN again it’s like being strangled and having enough time to clap the one who’s actually performing the deed. Dr Sant, as always, once you’re in power you’ll be getting quite a large amount of headaches with the burdens the Nationalists will be leaving behind them.
