Zeppi l-Hafi lands in jail

Karl Schembri

Joseph Fenech, known as Zeppi l-Hafi, was sent to prison Friday for failing to pay a fine handed to him by court in connection with evading duty and smuggling alcohol.
Prison sources said Fenech was in Division 5 over the weekend, although he may be released if he pays the fine.
Il-Hafi was granted a presidential pardon on recommendation by then prime minister Eddie Fenech Adami, who is now the President, on the grounds that he would expose the mastermind behind the attempted murder of Richard Cachia Caruana in 1994. But the case remains unsolved as the man indicated by Fenech as the person who commissioned the crime, Meinrad Calleja, was found not guilty last year in a trial by jury. Reacting to the verdict, Fenech Adami had slammed the jury system, insisting that he would not revoke the pardons granted to Calleja.
In November 2003, Fenech was taken to court under arrest after failing to turn up for court proceedings in a case in which he stood accused of defrauding a man for Lm20,000.
