With reference to a recent programme on a local TV station, some of the cart ruts at the ‘Ghar il-Kbir’ caves clearly indicate that they have been dug manually, as pick axe (baqqun) marks are clearly visible.
The random layout in which the ruts are found indicate that they had nothing to do with the canals that are used to quarry stone. It is a mystery the quarries seem to have been suddenly abandoned - the custom was that a quarry was constructed on the site of a new building, normally using the cut and fill method whereby using the quarried area as a basement,
