Mintoff looks to Europe for his water supply

Karl Schembri

The fiery former prime minister Dom Mintoff has turned to the European Union to seek advice on his “human rights” situation in what turns out to be the first query made to newly appointed head of EU delegation, Joanna Drake.
Mintoff turned to Drake to ask about his alleged rights in his fight against the Water Services Corporation after his water and electricity were cut off because he failed to pay some Lm1,300 in bills.
In his telephone conversation, he asked her about the possibilities in Brussels to get back his water for free.
His empty taps led him have a try at making a human rights claim in court, alleging that “with what was happening to me, I would not have the possibility to walk again with the living”.
Mintoff’s bid to file a court case against the corporation started after his supply was cut due to outstanding bills, allegedly seven years of unpaid bills, forcing him to get his water from a neighbour.
The 88-year-old also believes his telephone, mail and computer were tapped and tampered with.
