Former NationalisT MP and Deputy Speaker Michael Bonnici turned down the Nationalist Party’s idea to offer him a tribute and a medal in last September’s Independence celebrations, MaltaToday has learnt.
The party wanted to honour some of its past people, something which didn’t really turn on Bonnici.
Friends of the former MP say he unceremoniously “sent off” Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi when he approached him with the idea earlier.
Contacted Friday for the reasons for turning down Gonzi’s offer, Bonnici said: “No comment.”
The Nationalists honoured by the party last September included former MPs Frank Portelli, Stanley Zammit, Joe Psaila Savona and Noel Buttigieg Scicluna.
