Vodafone’s 3G next year

Vodafone Malta Limited has announced that over 20,000 prepaid customers subscribed to its latest campaign within the first week of launch. Vodafone launched 'Talk for an hour and Pay for a minute' on Monday 14 November.
Prepaid customers subscribed to this offer can make calls to other Vodafone numbers throughout the weekend and between 8.00pm and 8.00am on weekdays at 12 cents per call irrespective of length of call.
"Vodafone's network is capable of handling heavy traffic whilst delivering the seamless service that is expected by our customers. There was an overwhelming upsurge in calls during the past week, as twenty thousand customers were talking for an hour and paying for one minute only from their Vodafone," said Vodafone Malta's Chief Technical Officer, Joseph Muscat.
"We had originally set a limit of 20,000 customers who could benefit from this offer, however after reviewing the fantastic response we have now increased this limit to 40,000 - confident that our network can handle this amount of traffic without any difficulty.”
Two years ago Vodafone Malta made a major investment in a second Mobile Switching Centre (MSC) strengthening Malta's telecommunication structure. The purpose of a second MSC was to ensure continued service to all Vodafone customers at all times as well as to increase the overall network's traffic handling capacity.
The company is now in the process of rolling out its 3G network. This new technology will involve a substantial investment.
"Our customers are now looking forward to 3G which will be launched next year. Since the launch of 3G necessitates the layout of a new network, it will not be possible for any operator to launch this new technology before mid-next year," continued Muscat.
