The Ministry for Home affairs remained unfazed by Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera’s claim that “a wave of drugs is entering prison”.
Herrera made the claim in a sentence on 16 November when pronouncing prison warden Raymond Gerada guilty of possessing and trafficking heroin.
A spokesman for minister Tonio Borg just said the prison administration “is trying to increase control” of the drugs situation, which at present has one out of three prisoners at Corradino serving a sentence related to drugs.
Since last January, there were 32 drug finds in prison, 21 of which happened only in the last six months.
According to the spokesman, the prison administration’s efforts include constant training conducted on personnel by an experienced instructor and regular daily random searches are at the drug criminals’ section and inside the prison workshops..
The police section increased the number of sniffer dogs while searches in prison cells and vehicles have been intensified, the spokesman said. Visitors and prisoners returning from court are inspected thoroughly from the personnel.
The prison charity Mid-Dlam ghad-Dawl said the magistrate should substantiate her extraordinary claim, and insisted with the minister that he could not overlook such an important statement.
