Construction developer Nazzareno Vassallo, 53, was handed a six-month suspended sentence for the illegal employment of workers in Sliema. He was found guilty of not having notified the Employment and Training Corporation of the employment of workers.
The workers in question were not Maltese citizens. Magistrate Antonio Giovanni Vella liberated Vassallo with the condition that he does not commit another offence in six months.
Vassallo was accused on 20 June 2005. Since 1 August, non-EU nationals have to apply for employment through the ETC through a potential employer, before they enter Malta. Employers must also provide a guarantee of a health insurance policy for employees.
Government allowed a one-time amnesty for employers to regulate the situation of any foreign nationals who entered Malta before July 2005, and register their workers with the ETC.
Government had also announced more severe penalties for employers who employ foreign workers illegally, and would be blacklisted from government contracts for three years. Questions sent to the Ministry for Employment were unanswered at the time of going to print.
