Malta Labour Party leader Alfred Sant has declared the MLP “could not be held accountable” for the excessive use of force and violence from former members of the party during the infamous 1980s.
Sant was answering a question by MaltaToday during a special edition of Super One programme ViciVersa.
“Members of both the Nationalist Party and the Church had committed grave excesses,” Sant said. “Still, asking for an apology for a past event will lead to vicious circles preventing us from looking at the future with hope and faith. These are issues that belong to past generations – we need to look ahead.”
This is not the first time a politician from either side of the House has refused to take full responsibility for the actions of their party members. The physical or psychological violence perpetuated by political parties is often used to gain political mileage and accusations are thrown around like ping pong balls during debates between politicians.
The unfortunate reality for people like Anthony Mifsud, tortured and framed into taking responsibility for the escape of Louis Bartolo from jail, and Karin Grech, the daughter of strike breaker Dr Edwin Grech who died at her family home after opening a letter bomb, is that justice has never been forthcoming neither from any political party nor from the law courts.
