Forty years of free trade-unionism

The birth of UHM in 1966 heralded a new dawn for the Maltese workers.
It was the first union to organise strike action across the public service in 1967 when the Nationalist Party was in government. In the 1970s and 1980s the UHM was in the forefront struggling to uphold free trade-unionism in Malta. In those days the other general trade union – the GWU was hand in hand with the socialist government doing battle to free trade unionism.
During the Nationalist governments from 1987 till today we have seen the UHM taking strike action in many organisations of the public sector.
The Maltese workers appreciated the work carried out by the UHM during the last 40 years and embraced this union in their thousands. Let us all cherish free trade unions by making the UHM the prime union of our country.
