Cassola asked to contest Italian elections

After having failed to be elected on an Alternattiva ticket, Arnold Cassola may be abandoning the Maltese scene and try his luck for the Italian parliament. Arnold Cassola, who has Italian citizenship has been approached by the centre-left Unione alliance to contest the forthcoming Italian elections in April.
Cassola’s second term as general secretary of the European Green Party will expire shortly. He was a few votes short of being elected an MEP back in 2004.
The news that Cassola was approached to contest was reported by the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. Contacted by MaltaToday, the Greens’ general secretary confirmed he had been approached by the Unione coalition to contest next April’s elections.
“I will be announcing my decision in the very near future,” he told this newspaper. If he accepts, he will one of the candidates contesting the six seats reserved for Italians living in Europe. Cassola, whose father was Italian, will be contesting for one of the six seats reserved for Italians living in other European countries.
Italians living in other countries have been given the right to vote in Italian elections in 2001.
Twelve parliamentary deputies and six senators are elected from four geographic districts. Six parliamentary deputies and two deputies are elected from the European district.
If he accepts to contest, his candidature will need the approval of the Unione coalition, a variegated alliance which includes Socialists, former Christian Democrats, Greens and Communists, led by former EU Commission President Romano Prodi.
