New parking tax in the pipeline at ADT

James Debono

A White Paper on transport proposes an “efficient and effective use” of road space but the Malta Transport Authority (ADT) is not denying reports of a new parking tax to be that could be introduced in the next months.
Asked by MaltaToday whether fixed charges and a tax of parking for parking lots managed by attendants will be introduced, a spokesperson for the ADT told MaltaToday the authority is “recommending measures to ensure that the use of existing on-street car parking is maximised throughout the day.”
The ADT’s recommendations claim to follow the guidelines in the transport White Paper to ensure the “efficient and effective use of existing road space whilst promoting a modal shift in order to reduce traffic-related pollution.”
The authority’s spokesperson said ADT believes “certain sites need to be modernised and supervised properly.”
Only last week MaltaToday revealed that the licences of car park attendants have only been renewed for the next three months. Following their expiry, new tenders for the licences will be issued for the management of the lots.
The authority is now seeking to address parking problems in commercial and recreational areas by “recommending measures to ensure that the use of existing on-street car parking is maximised throughout the day.”
Rumours of a new parking tax and parking fee system have been circulating in the media for the past weeks. Writing in l-orizzont, columnist Reno Borg claimed “the government will be introducing a new tax on parking, by claiming a part of the earnings of car-park attendants.”
The ADT spokesperson had nothing to say about Reno Borg’s comments.
