‘Labour set to lose Sannat majority’

Reference is made to the article in MaltaToday of 15 January 2006, entitled ‘Labour set to lose Sannat majority’.
The reference to the Department for Local Government’s recommendation to the Sannat Local Council to take the necessary disciplinary action for any failure committed by the Executive Secretary is in no way related to the issue of the renewal of the said Executive Secretary’s contract. The renewal of the contract is decided by the Council in terms of the provisions of article 53 (5) of the local Councils Act. The discretion for such a renewal, therefore, vests solely in the Council. The Sannat Local Council Executive secretary’s contract, in fact, was approved by the Council during a Council meeting and such approval was not objected to by the Director for Local Government.
The reference to the Department’s actions regarding the recommendation for disciplinary action and with respect to the renewal of the Executive Secretary’s contract in an article implicating personal intrigues and other motivations is strongly objected to as it may lead one to understand that the Department for Local Government has an interest in such obscure manoeuvres.
Natalino Attard
Director, Local Government
