My paternal grandmother, grand uncles and aunts were baptised in Mellieha. They were as fervent churchgoers as their relatives in that community and as most of the community in that locality. Many changes have come over Mellieha, yet apart from paying lip service to Christianity’s input in forming the very essence of Mellieha, through the holding of some musico-literary evening in front of the Sanctuary, or an occasional Holy Mass, even if in a site other than the Parish Church
- for which one hopes the necessary ecclesiastical permits were obtained - this local government body should pitch in to protect something very dear to Christians, namely Sunday observance.
By allowing an activity to be held in the parish square on Sunday morning – not only was this distracting to Sunday churchgoers – it also reduced parking space for both residents and visitors from outside the locality visiting on Sunday and hoping to find a tranquil corner of Malta and not a show! What next, perhaps the Trade Fair could be relocated here next?
