“Delors”… again!

I believe that your “independent-minded” readers would be interested to read the following short article about the EU’s attempt to revive the EU Constitution, which met its Waterloo in the referenda held in France and Holland. This interesting article was penned by my English friend and UKIP official, Derek Bennett, in The Euro Realist (February 2006).
The title chosen by Mr Bennett was: “Up yours, Delors” again!
“The pressure never ceases in the quest to create the Eurostate. When EU-sceptics think they have won a battle, such as the victory of the ‘No’ votes against an appalling EU Constitution in France and Holland during 2005, the EU, like one of the indestructible robots in the Terminator films, rises from the onslaught, takes little notice of public opinion, and continues in its wake of destruction”.
“Undetterred by this defeat, the task of foisting the Constitution upon us has passed from the arrogant and pompous figure of Valery Giscard d’Estaing, to none other than the old terminator of nation states and veteran federalist, Jacques Delors, the former EU Commission President. Unlike M. Giscard, it was he who turned the British Trade Union Movement from being EU-sceptic to pro-EU after a speech during a Trades Union Congress (when he dangled the carrot of the so-called Social Charter, in front of delegates). He will be a dangerous figure to tackle even at the age of 80. Delors is a wily old boy whose every move will have to be watched carefully”.
“It has been reported in the press that Delors is in talks with the EU Commission regarding ways of reviving the EU Constitution in the form of a new treaty which EU officials are hoping will be more likely to be approved by the people. It appears the big push for approval will be based on EU-wide rights to housing, education and justice (Can anyone believe the “housing” bit?)… Added to this, plans for a Euro tax have been revived by the new Austrian presidency (and by Tony Blair during the last days of the British presidency) which may also not go down well with many British voters” (and definitely, with the vast majority of Maltese and Gozitan voters too, dear Derek!) “who are reeling from Gordon Brown’s heavy hand on the tax tiller” (same as Lawrence Gonzi’s over here!).
“Delors is currently holding talks with Louis Michel the Belgian commissioner, who has also consulted an expert treaty writer. Like history repeating itself, the Sun may revive: ‘Up Yours, Delors again!’.”
The lesson which your “thinking” readers may learn from the above article, is that the EU never takes ‘No’ for an answer. And yet projects itself as the epitome of democracy – of course, only when the answer is “Yes”!
