A remarkable 47 per cent increase in nights spent by tourists on the island in Gozo was registered last year, a massive increase over the average of nights spent in the last four years.
Between 2001 and 2004, the nights spent by tourists on the island ranged from 446,000 to 490,000. Last year however, the figure shot up to 723,010.
The average length of stay was 11.6 days.
According to the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, the increase reflects figures from the National Statistics Office that between 2004 and 2005 there was an increase of tourists going to Gozo from 43,705 to 62,113, an increase of 18,400 or 42 per cent.
There was no confirmation whether the “tourists” are actually Maltese holidaymakers who have stepped up their weekend breaks on Gozo.
