The Ministry for Urban Development and Roads is refusing to disclose the cost of a taxpayer-funded leaflet it sent to Sliema residents days before the local council elections.
The leaflet, with the theme “For a Better Sliema”, was part of an “ongoing public consultation campaign” on the proposed traffic management measures for the Tigné peninsula.
Asked whether sending the leaflet on the eve of elections blurred the distinction between party and state, a ministry spokesperson said the leaflet was aimed at addressing the misinformation that exists on the issue.
The leaflet explains government plans for the semi-pedestrianisation of Bisazza Street and lower Tower Road and the subsequent diversion of traffic to Qui-Si-Sana.
It also claims to state the facts on the controversial Qui-Si-Sana car park, where a residents are vehemently opposing its construction, which comes with a shopping and entertainment complex.
The leaflet however does not make any reference to the latest plans which include a theatre and a bowling alley attached to the car park, in what has been until now a quiet area.
The next step in the ministry’s campaign to combat misinformation is the launch of an online forum on its website.
