The two major parties are demanding that the counting process for the next general election is held out of the Mediterranean Conference Centre – the former hospital of the Knights of St John – to a bigger space that is less crammed.
The electoral counting process amid much banging on the perspex was transferred from Ta’ Qali to Valletta last year as the American government was planning to move its embassy to the former counting hall.
This left the electoral commission with no designated counting hall and now both parties want a different venue to the Valletta building which incidentally lies just opposite the commission’s offices in Evans Building.
“It’s something we’re looking into,” Chief Electoral Commissioner Edward Gatt said. “The parties have indicated to us that they would want the counting to happen elsewhere, so we’re now looking at the possible venues but no decision has been taken and there is still time to find a suitable place.”
