The proposed development of Ta’ Cenc which right now stands at MEPA offices consists of 57 villas and 49 bungalows, a newly built hotel and an extension of the present Ta’ Cenc Hotel. Moreover, a heritage park (and not a national park) is being also proposed at this stage. This not to mention the golf course being proposed during the second stage of what is called ‘development’.
Who is going to have a share in the pie? How many permanent and sustainable jobs can be created for Gozitans through this project? How much money will be made? By whom? Is it right for young Gozitans to be offered prospects of work as housemaids only for a few weeks during the year?
If the government could spend Lm9 million for the embassy in Brussels, could it not afford to buy this natural site for all future generations of Gozitans and Maltese, thus placing it beyond the reach of private greed? Should not the only two political parties represented in the parliament at least agree on this issue and show that the state can look after 2.5 per cent of the area of Gozo?
We all deserve better. I can’t imagine that MEPA is holding such a proposal in its offices. Such a proposal should have been dismissed from the very beginning.

The proposal to transform Ta’ Cenc into a tourist complex, comprising of over a hundred villas and bungalows is absurd. Typically, this is done through the excuse that the economy of the island is going to benefit out of it. A newly planned Sannat Hotel and extensions to the existing Ta’ Cenc Hotel are being proposed. Would this project really bring more tourists and create new jobs in Gozo when two other major hotels on our island have just closed down because they cannot attract enough customers?
The speculator of Ta’ Cenc should know better about the great asset of the virgin land surrounding his present hotel. He should invest in upgrading what he already has and design projects which are based on green economy rather than unsustainable development on such a magical plateau of Ta’ Cenc.
