At a site in the upper part of St Julian’s street, Birkirkara, close to San Gwann industrial estate, an old, large and architecturally rich house is being dismantled. As far as I know no permits had been issued for this particular house as every application had been turned down. This shows the kind of abuse that goes on in this little country of ours. It seems that though the laws are there, they are not applied the same to everyone. I think that at least in this particular sector Madame justice’s weights need to be calibrated!
To make matters even more suspicious, works started on the early morning of Good Friday. This leads one to assume that it was an intentional move so as to make sure that all relevant authorities would not be available. One asks: what will be the authorities’ attitude once the first storey of this particular house is dismantled? Would they still ask of the culprit to restore the house? Or as most probably happens all the time, they would give their blessing and go ahead for the development to continue on the premise that the building is now nearly completely destroyed!
A few months ago an application for a school in our neighbourhood (yes, Kappara is just five minutes away on foot) got a lot of coverage from the local media for residents whose plight was justly made heard. But it seems that to my neighbourhood this is not so. Maybe we are of a lower class or whatsoever it is, but the area on the outskirts of Birkirkara, once full of beautiful houses and a peaceful neighbourhood, is now changing. Houses are being literally torn down and blocks of flats are springing up like mushrooms on some decaying matter. I think it is high time that the authorities focus and dedicate a little of their time to the needs of the people.
This message was also logged in the form of a complaint on the MEPA website, hoping that the authority would look into the matter with urgency and appropriate action is taken.
