A walk for peace will be held next Saturday in a bid to unite persons and various groups to send a message of peace to the world.
The Walk for Peace will take place on Saturday 29 April. It will start at St George’s Square in Valletta at 7 pm and walk to Freedom Square. Participants have been asked to bring candles to be laid down in Freedom Square to form the symbol of peace.
A peace demonstration will also be held in the US on the third anniversary of the Iraqi invasion. “We felt the need to do something similar, and raise consciousness on the effects of war on people and children,” Rebecca Borg, the spokesperson for the organisers, said yesterday.
The group said statistics from the United for Peace and Justice coalition in the US stated that over 2,300 US military personnel and 30,000 Iraqi civilians had been killed in the Iraqi war.
“Over two years, world military spending reached USD956 billion by 2003. Less than one per cent of that could have been used to put every child in school by the year 2000, and yet it did not happen,” Borg said.
“We realise that the matter of stopping this carnage is out of our control as individuals, but we realise that if one person takes a stand for peace and talks about peace, they will be listened to and others will join in solidarity, and walk for peace. When the last drop of blood that can be shed, will be shed, it will be time to rebuild human hope and understanding.
“Until then we only hope that by educating persons, humanity will resolve to learn from its mistakes, and one day we will live in a more humane world where human lives are not lost for political revenge or monetary gain.”
