The ex-Mayor of Santa Venera, Michael Caruana, resigned from the council just a year after he failed to retain the majority in the traditionally blue locality.
In an interview with MaltaToday just after the defeat, Caruana, 55, had charged his Nationalist candidate colleagues of mounting “a destructive campaign” against their own party, blaming them for the loss and warning he was “seriously considering” to resign.
Contacted last night, Caruana said he resigned both because he could not work with the new mayor, whom he claimed was purposely convening council meetings when he could not attend, and for personal reasons.
Caruana served on the council for the last 12 years, three terms of which he was mayor.
A veteran journalist with the PN’s daily newspaper In-Nazzjon, Caruana said he also resigned from other positions he held in the local parish.
“I will only remain active on the Cana movement,” he said.
