World Cup fever boosts TV sales

The FIFA World Cup has certainly upped sales for electronics outlets all over the island. The footballing bonanza that started Friday has boosted sales figures for retailers of television screens, with an increase in the sales of big screen TVs and projectors.
“The last three weeks have been good,” a Tip Top salesman, in Fgura, said. “We have seen an increase in big screen TVs and projectors. Bars have been our main customers.”
A Flamingo salesman also said the World Cup had ushered in positive sales figures for the outlet. “We have seen an increase in sales of LCD TVs. It’s the kind of event that carries with it an element of increased sales. If this tournament happened every month it would be great!”
Eman Castagna, the manager at Sound Machine, said the World Cup had brought with it a 25 per cent increase in sales. “It is quite a significant upturn. Mainly, it urged customers who had been toying with the idea of changing their televisions or looking to buy a big screen to take up the opportunity. They decided to take the plunge because of the World Cup.”
Castagna also said customers had taken up the opportunity for the innovative money-back deal if a World Cup favourite wins the competition.
“We offered customers their money back if they purchased their televisions from us between 22 May and 9 June, if England win the World Cup. They are our favourites.”
World Cup organisers are expecting about one million people to visit Germany for the tournament. More than one billion people worldwide watched the last World Cup final in Yokohama, Japan in 2002, where Brazil beat Germany 2-0.
The cumulative worldwide television viewing figures for the tournament are expected to top 30 billion.
All police leave has been cancelled across Germany as security forces brace themselves for a massive operation.
Five-time winners Brazil - the only team to play in all 17 of the previous World Cups - are the favourites to win again this time round.
They will need to emulate their cup-winning side of 1958, who lifted the trophy by beating Sweden - the only time a non-European team has won the competition in Europe.
