The Maltacom directory enquiries service is still giving the wrong telephone number for the Occupational Health and Safety Authority, almost two years since it was changed.
Last week, an individual tried contacting the authority in an emergency after he got the number from the Maltacom enquiries service, but could only get through to a fax machine.
Checked again last Friday, the service was still giving the wrong number – 21232907 – which was also given by Maltacom’s online directory.
When told that the number was wrong, the person answering the directory service said there were no other numbers registered for the authority.
However, both the go mobile and Vodafone directory services gave the right telephone numbers when contacted: 21247677/8.
An OHSA officer contacted Friday said the number given by Maltacom had been changed almost two years ago and was probably now linked to a fax machine in the office.
“I would like to point out that Maltacom had already been informed in the past to rectify the erroneous telephone number listed in their records,” the authority’s Chief Executive, Mark Gauci, writes today in a letter to the editor (see below). “Regrettably it seems that the situation persists through no fault of the OHSA.”
Besides the landline, Dr Gauci gives 99496786 as the emergency line.
I refer to the letter “Nasty fall: where’s the OHSA” by Leonard Schembri in the last edition of Maltatoday, which letter was also featured in another Sunday newspaper.
Without entering into the merits of the case and in particular the OHSA’s role in such incidents involving safety to the general public, kindly note that the telephone number quoted by Mr Schembri is not assigned to the OHSA.
I can empathise with the reader feeling frustrated that he could not get in touch with an entity he wanted to contact. However, I would like to point out that Maltacom had already been informed in the past to rectify the erroneous telephone number listed in their records. Regrettably it seems that the situation persists through no fault of the OHSA.
In fact, the OHSA may be contacted on tel 21247677/8 or in case of emergency on mobile no 99496786. Alternatively, one may also send an email on ohsa@gov.mt.
