The director of the Marsa immigrants’ open centre, Terry Gosden, received a death threat in a letter addressed to him last Wednesday urging immigrants to leave the islands by the end of June.
“All illegal immigrants leave Malta by 31 June (sic) or you should wish that you never set foot in Malta,” the letter said. “We will burn you all. KKK.”
Posted in an envelope with Gosden’s name printed on it, the letter bore icons of skulls and crossbones used previously by leaflets scattered outside the Marsa open centre and elsewhere by “KKK” carrying violent messages against foreign workers and immigrants, threatening to kill them.
The incident was reported to the police.
Last May, 18-year-old Yves Mbotu from Congo was badly injured in both his feet after he was hit by a car in Marsa in what was clearly a racially motivated attack.
In July last year, an Eritrean man was attacked on the road between Hal Far and Birzebbuga and was also robbed of his mobile phone and the Lm200 salary he had just collected.
In June also last year, four Eritrean immigrants were surrounded by a group of between eight and 10 young men as they walked back to the Hal Far open centre, with two of them assaulted and repeatedly punched in the face.
