Government proposes new routes to attract low cost airlines

Kurt Sansone

The discussions between government and hoteliers over low cost airlines have made headway in the past few days with government actively considering opening up new routes in addition to those already announced just over a month ago.
Speaking yesterday to MaltaToday, Tourism Minister Francis Zammit Dimech said that in July government will be issuing a call for tenders for the operation of new routes that will be particularly attractive to the large low cost carriers.
Zammit Dimech confirmed that government would be including new routes to those already announced earlier this year, which were deemed unattractive for major low cost airlines like Ryanair and Easyjet.
The minister would not reveal which additional routes would be included.
“Irrespective of the reports commissioned by Air Malta and MHRA on the impact of low cost airlines, government is pro-actively seeking to introduce major low cost carriers in a sustainable way,” Zammit Dimech said.
