Environmental NGOs yesterday rallied at Mgarr to express their objection to the extension of development zones by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority.
The lobby Flimkien Ghal Ambjent Ahjar, together with the Ramblers’ Association and Friends of the Earth yesterday said opposition to the rationalism proposal was clearly opposed by thousands who had submitted objections to MEPA.
“NGOs are against extending development zones. Even those who could conceivably stand to gain from the new building opportunities, including the Chamber of Architects, the Chamber of Planners and the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association have expressed themselves against extending the development zones,” the organisations said yesterday.
“We live in a democratic country and it is the duty of a democratic government to listen to the people and act according to the Constitution. Under the circumstances, and in the interests of transparency, we request MEPA to provide plausible justification for violating the Constitution allowing the extension of the development zone. As things now stand, nothing whatsoever indicates that extension of the development boundaries fulfils any social need or that it is in the national interest. It does not serve the common good,” the groups said.
