Many medical practitioners have sworn by the Hippocratic oath since it was first proposed by Hippocrates known as the father of modern medicine.
“… each of us has a unique beginning, from the moment of conception… As soon as the twenty-three chromosomes carried by the sperm it encounter yet another twenty-three chromosomes carried by the ovum, the whole information necessary and sufficient to spell out all the characteristics of ‘new being’ is gathered… When this information carried by the sperm and the ovum has encountered each other, then a new human being is defined which has never occurred before and will never occur again... [the zygote, and the cells produced in the succeeding divisions] is not just simply a non-descript cell, or a ‘population’ or a loose ‘collection’ of cells but a specialized individual, (i.e.), someone who will build himself according to his own rule.” (ref: Davis V. Davis, Circuit Court – Tennessee, 1989).
“Almost all women seeking therapeutic abortions repeated the words: ‘Oh it’s not a baby, there’s nothing formed, it’s only a BLOB of tissue,’ or ‘certainly I don’t have any feelings for it.’ Those words imply ignorance and indeed constitute wishful thinking, the desire to escape reality.” (Quote: Canadian Physicians in “Abortion wars” May 2006).
To paraphrase Charles Dickens – “the Law is an Ass”. If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art with respect while I live and be remembered with affection thereafter.
