MEPA acts on illegal statues

The Gozo Cathedral has suspended the inauguration ceremony for two statues that were to be erected on the steps leading up to the cathedral in Victoria after the Malta Environment and Planning Authority notified the church’s administration that the ‘development’ required a permit.
MEPA only took action after MaltaToday last Sunday revealed that the country’s highest authorities had been invited to the blessing and inauguration ceremony despite the statues not being covered by a permit.
In a statement, the Gozo Cathedral’s administration said since it “believed in the principle of legality, it was postponing the inauguration ceremony until the permits are issued.”
