Labour MP tells EU of raves in bird sanctuaries

Labour MP Adrian Vassallo has written to Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas asking him to investigate the issuance of permits for “rave parties and mass activities” being held in protected sites.
Claiming that Natura 2000 provisions – the EU’s list of specially protected areas – were being “persistently disregarded in Malta”, Vassallo asked Dimas to investigate the Malta Environment and Planning Authority for giving clearance to applications for rave parties held in bird sanctuaries such as the Bosketto Gardens and cliff areas.
“Police permits are issued on the strength of clearance by MEPA. The latter areas are the habitat of Malta’s national bird and other endangered species. The mass activities to which I refer are being allowed even during the breeding season.
“The situation is getting worse and calls for your urgent authoritative intervention,” Vassallo wrote.
