The latest in ludicrous statements was recently made by Minister Pullicino who launched a call for tenders to rehabilitate Maghtab with a view to convert it into a recreation park.
Given that all those who live in the vicinity of the “temporary storage facility” at Ta’Zwejra (Minister Pullicino’s 2004 description of the Ta’ Zwejra garbage dump) are finding it horribly unpleasant, if not downright unhealthy, to inhale the stench of rotting and decomposing garbage that pervades the whole area, one is entitled to ask the minister how he hopes to entice people to visit Maghtab Park while untreated garbage continues to be dumped into the open a stone’s throw away. And while we’re at it the minister might just as well tell us when he intends to stop dumping garbage at the ‘temporary storage facility’. Unless by his definition ‘temporary’ means the foreseeable future!
The other equally ludicrous statement came from Minister Zammit Dimech. What on earth prompted him to declare that the extension of development zones is entirely compatible with his policy on tourism! If indeed he believes that further expansion of built up areas is conducive to improving our tourist arrivals, then no wonder that tourism is in the sorry state that it’s in. I prefer to think party politics required him to make the statement to show solidarity with his colleagues’ unpopular development zone extension.
Similarly Minister Zammit Dimech tells us that tour operators are now selling Malta as an upmarket destination. What a farce! Today’s Malta is simply not able to attract tourists. Period. It has ceased to be a desirable destination. Upmarket indeed!
