It’s either three to four MPs elected on the Green ticket or else he’ll resign.
The chairman of Alternattiva Demokratika, Harry Vassallo, declares in an interview today that he will resign unless his party gets elected to parliament in the next election.
Vassallo says his target is “three or four people in parliament”.
“I think this is going to be the best election we’ll ever have,” Vassallo says. “If we don’t get into parliament next time round I would resign.”
In the last general election, AD got 0.7 per cent of the national vote but it rocked the political spectrum in the 2004 European Parliament elections when its candidate, Arnold Cassola, garnered 9 per cent, although he failed to get elected Vassallo however admits his party has so far failed to win over the disenchanted pale blue voters who are becoming vociferous in their dissent against the government.
“Many of these have not come to the point where they are actually looking for an alternative,” he admits. “It is something of, not a disappointment; I would say a reality check. When you hear people saying that they won’t vote, their threat not to vote shows they have made their revolution but are still within a one party world... Freedom is one of those things that if you don’t use it you lose it. Nobody can expect, hope for a change by sitting at home and letting other people decide for them.”
