Gate blocks foreshore once again at Pebbles Beach

James Debono

A gate blocking access to the Qui-Si-Sana shoreline has been erected once again, after being removed by the Lands Department back in February.
The gate had been installed without a permit at Pebbles Lido, in Sliema, after which the Malta Environment and Planning Authority requested the owner to keep the access free for anyone who wishes to pass from this part of the beach.
But just five months after the gate was finally removed, the barrier was installed once again. MEPA has already carried out two inspections and photos were taken of gate in question.
According to a MEPA spokesperson the gate in question is barring access to a five-metre passage leading to the foreshore.
The tenants of the beach had back in 1997 presented MEPA with a plan issued by the Lands Department which shows that a five-metre passage had to be left between Pebbles Lido and Union Club.
According to the duty manager the gate will be removed during the winter season. Alternattiva Demokratika’s councillor in Sliema, Michael Briguglio, has raised this issue in the Sliema local council demanding that access to the shore is reclaimed. MEPA has now referred the case to the attention of the lands department.
