I am writing to rebut the several misquoted sentences in the report carried by Karl Stagno-Navarra in your paper of 6 August, 2006. I shall not refer to any of misleading conclusions arrived by the author and I shall limit myself to text containing in inverted commas (direct speech).
During the course of my telephone conversation with the author, I categorically deny that I have stated the following phrases: MLP was “repeatedly failing to be the alternative government”; “The leadership keeps missing on all opportunities to prove itself as a credible alternative to the current administration”; “The people are disgusted at the way the MLP is handling the pension’s issue, and will not be taken for a ride about it.”
What I stated about the pensions issue was: The government implemented a piecemeal reform by putting in place measures in order to reduce the cash outflows but failed to make a holistic reform as proposed; while Labour presented a plan on how to arrive at the final pensions reform including an expert conference. I queried who these experts are as most of the pensions reform reports have been a cut and paste exercise from World Bank reports or conducted by foreign consultants. I said that I would like to know who these experts are.
The only comment I made on the MLP was that there was no change from the new administration of the MLP.
