Man critical
A 75-year-old man from Gzira is in critical condition after being hit by a car as he crosses the road on a zebra crossing in Gzira. The vehicle is driven by a 37-year-old from Valletta
Injustices
Labour deputy leader Charles Mangion, reiterates his party’s pledge to redress the injustices that public service workers have suffered under the present administration.
During an interview on Super One radio, Mangion says Labour would identify and review all injustices people have suffered in recent years and ensure that justice is done.

Miscarriage of justice
The Times reveals that an inmate serving a prison sentence for pushing his girlfriend off a third floor balcony wrote to the Prime Minister asking him to send his case back to the Court of Criminal Appeal to be reconsidered after the woman told the police he had done no such thing.
Marco Zarb, 25, claims he has been a victim of a “miscarriage of justice”. In October 2004, Zarb was jailed for eight years after jurors found him guilty, by six votes to three, of committing a crime of passion when he tried to kill his girlfriend, Georgina Borg, in 2001 by throwing her off a balcony in Marsalforn.
The Times says that on June 28 this year, Borg released a statement to the police declaring that Zarb never pushed her and that she had lied under oath because she was angry and blamed him for a miscarriage.
Overdose
A Marsaxlokk teenager is found unconscious outside an entertainment establishment in Paceville in what is suspected to be a drug overdose. The 16-year-old girl is admitted to hospital in danger of dying.

Drug busts
The police and the army arrest a number of people, allegedly found in possession of drugs in the early hours of the day, in the now traditional Santa Marija drug busts.
The arrests are made in different parts of the island. Drugs recovered by the police include cannabis, cocaine and ecstasy tablets
Irregular migrants
28 irregular migrants, 20 men, six women and two children, land in Birzebbuga after their boat ire spotted at about 6.00am just after they land in St George’s Bay.

Tremor
A mild earthquake, 20km offshore to the southeast shakes the island at around 4.45am. No damage is reported as the tremor is recorded at around three on the Richter scale.
GWU resignations
Nine members of the executive committee of the GWU’s public service section resign en bloc in solidarity with former section secretary Josephine Attard Sultana and its president Francis Buttigieg, sacked by the union last week.

MTA CEO appointed
The former managing director of an electronics company, David Mifsud is appointed chief executive officer at the Malta Tourism Authority. The appointment comes hot on the heels of the appointment of new MTA chairman Sam Mifsud, after the resignations of former executive chairman Romwald Lungaro-Mifsud.
Drug charges
The court hears how a drug squad policeman, who by chance sighted a man known to the drug squad for suspected drug trafficking arrested Aaron Axisa, 24, of Zejtun and caught him in possession of 10 grams of heroin.
The policeman is testifying before magistrate Lawrence Quintano.
Axisa pleads not guilty to charges of trafficking in heroin and being in possession of drugs in circumstances denoting it was not for his personal use.

European Forum head
Dr Gabriella Pace is appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Forum Malta fl-Ewropa by the foreign ministry. Pace graduated as Doctor of Laws in 1997 from the University of Malta.

Migrant tragedy
The sea between Lampedusa and Malta yet again claims the life of tens of irregular migrants after the boat they are travelling on capsizes. Italians coast guards mount a rescue mission to try and save the lives of as many as 100 migrants. An Italian navy ship that spots the vessel before it begins to list, manages to rescue 70 people. The bodies of at least seven people are recovered and tens others are believed to be still missing at sea.
