Employers and trade union representatives who sit on the MCESD council are reported to be touting names of possible successors to Victor Scicluna’s chairmanship that expires at the end of September.
A strong lobby is reported to be pushing for former Chamber of Commerce President Reginald Fava for the post. However, Reginald Fava – a known and respected businessman – is a name that seems to be dividing the social partners.
Though the choice of nominating a chairman for the MCESD is a prerogative of the Prime Minister following consultation with all social partners, sources within Castille are keeping tight-lipped over the possible candidates to succeed Victor Scicluna.
Others are seeing the possibility of the Prime Minister reappointing Victor Scicluna, should he choose to accept the invitation to stay on.
As to Reginald Fava, the lobby within the MCESD – reportedly steered by the employers – is finding a strong opposition by trade unionists.
While MEA officials explained to MaltaToday that “Reginald Fava would be good for the MCESD”, others from UHM are adamantly against the nomination.
GWU officials expressed agreement to the nomination, but a top FOI official deemed the nomination as “not desired”.
This official qualified his comment by referring to the MCESD as the Council for economic and social development. “Here I see the economic, but where is the social?” he asked, questioning Fava’s sensitivity to the social dimension.
Contacted by MaltaToday, Fava said he was surprised that he was being named for the chairmanship.
“I know nothing about this” he said, but asked if he would consider the post he added: “I will not comment.”
