Migrant’s sms alerts rescuers

An sms sent out to a random number in Italy from a terrified immigrant led the AFM to recover a boat of migrants with an Eritrean woman’s corpse aboard as they were stranded south of Malta early yesterday.
The sms is believed to have been received on a cell phone in Turin, with the receiver alerting the authorities who in turn contacted the Maltese Armed Forces who set out a search and rescue operation.
A total 36 immigrants were spotted on board a fibre-glass boat by an AFM patrol boat. While boarding, the AFM found the corpse of the Eritrean woman, who apparently died due to a medicine overdose. An inquiry has been ordered, and an autopsy on the corpse has been set for tomorrow.
Meanwhile, another 18 immigrants were yesterday escorted to shore by the AFM.
