Maltacom to have Digital TV in “few months”

Karl Stagno-Navarra

Maltacom has decided to confront Melita Cable head-on and will soon start to offer digital television services (DTTV).
A recent board meeting approved the plan and agreed to get the service operational within the next nine months, sparking speculation on whether the group will start its operations from a new platform or take over DTTV provider Multiplus as was originally planned two years ago.
In an interview with sister paper Business Today, newly-appointed CEO David Kay confirmed the decision taken for DTTV, and announced that Maltacom will be offering 3G telephony as from April next year.
“We expect to sign a contract with the technology providers in the coming weeks,” he said, while adding that 3G handsets are to be made available shortly.
While arguing that he doesn’t believe it to be late in the day for introducing 3G telephony through subsidiary Go Mobile, David Kay insists that “we will get it right, and as right as it can get.”
The decisions taken have had the direct input of Tecom – Maltacom’s new owners from Dubai – who through their consultants based in Malta have led the board to strategic decisions regarding the future of the group.
Maltacom has now embarked on strengthening all its products and packaging everything, from fixed and mobile telephony, to VOIP, paging, broadband, and television, to all clients. The broadband and digital television projects are to be financed through what David Kay defines as the company’s “healthy cash pile and adequate resources”.
In his interview, David Kay talks about his plans to remove all barriers between subsidiaries and to enhance communication within the whole group in an effort to offer all products with one voice.
Other matters tackled are the recent interim financial results for the group and his plan to better the group’s performance. The full interview with Maltacom CEO David Kay will appear in next Wednesday’s edition of Business Today.
