PN fields its first candidates
The PN published a list of 58 candidates to be fielded for the forthcoming general elections. The list is the “first” and non-conclusive, as the party is still considering more candidates.Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi had just made it clear that the government did not intend holding an early election and that it intended to see out the “five full years”.
Bring on the election, says Labour leader
The Labour Party is well prepared for a general election, no matter when the Prime Minister plans to hold it, Opposition leader Alfred Sant told supporters in Dingli. The MLP was building a new alliance and was planning to meet three quarters of the electorate by the general election, Dr Sant said.
Eight councils protest against airshow
Eight local councils have taken a common stand against this weekend’s Malta International Airshow, worried about a repeat of the collision between two stunt planes that occurred during the Aero GP, killing one pilot.

Bull kills man
A Gozitan lost his life when he was gored by a bull. The man, aged 58, of Sannat, was pierced when he was tending a herd of cows in a field in Triq l-Ghaxra ta’ Ottubru, in his village.
Court hears mother’s
testimony against her son
The mother of a 16-year-old boy told a court how her son was constantly causing trouble and even threatened he would find a way to kill her. “He is constantly misbehaving. We’re devastated at home. Devastated. He threatens me, even with knives... He even threatens me outside, in front of people, and all this because I had reported to police that he was stealing,” the woman told Magistrate Anthony Vella.

EU grants Malta €1.3m in aid on immigration
Malta was allocated an additional €1.3 million (Lm0.6m) in EU funds to compensate for the costs associated with illegal immigration.
The funds were allocated as part of the EU ARGO programme and will be utilised in two projects coordinated by the Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs and by the army during the last four months of this year.
Man killed in car crash
Christopher Tabone, 21, of St Paul’s Bay, died following a collision on the Coast Road. Tabone died at the ITU, less than four hours after he was admitted to hospital. The accident happened when for some reason the car he was driving swerved onto the other side of the road and crashed into an oncoming loaded truck, the police said.

Prime Minister addresses Mass Meeting
Addressing a PN mass meeting on the granaries in Floriana, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi told supporters that when the time comes, people will entrust the PN once again with government. He also stated that the election is still “a long way far”.

Independence day commemorated
Malta commemorated the 42 nd anniversary of it’s independence from British rule. The day was marked with a pontifical mass at St. John’s Co-Cathedral, and a wreath laying cereomony in Floriana by the President Eddie Fenech Adami and Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.
EU agrees to help Libya
EU justice and home affairs ministers asked EU Justice Commissioner Franco Frattini to come up with concrete proposals on helping Libya deal with illegal immigration, particularly on its southern borders. Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg described the initiative as crucial for Malta.

Man hit by car dies
An elderly man who was hit by a car on August 13 died in hospital on as a result of his injuries. 76 year-old Albert Navarro of Gzira had been in the Intensive Therapy Unit of St Luke’s Hospital since the accident.
Saturday 23 September
Man killed in hunting incident
A 50 year-old hunter was accidentally killed by a shot fired from his nephew’s gun. The victim was in a field in Zejtun, when his nephew opened fire from an adjacent field, accidentally hitting him just below his chin. The hunter was killed on the spot, while his nephew – who is licensed to hunt – had to be treated for shock.
