Manslaughter
A 22-year-old hunter, Kevin Fenech from Zejtun, who works as a policeman, is charged with the manslaughter of his 50-year-old uncle, who died from gunshot wounds while working in a field as his nephew was hunting nearby.

Monday, 25 September
Maltacom fined
The Malta Communications Authority slaps Maltacom with a Lm10,000 administrative fine and a daily penalty of Lm200 for failing to conclude an interconnection agreement with Melita Cable on the provision of fixed telephony.
The MCA says the daily fine shall be imposed until Maltacom signs the agreement in question.

Back to school
It’s back to school for 42,000 children attending state schools and the streets are clogged again with early morning traffic.

Tuesday, 26 September
Terror plan
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf says in his memoirs that Air Malta was one of the airlines targeted by terrorists in 2002 as part of a plan to crash airplanes belonging to the national airlines of various European countries at Heathrow airport.
The Pakistani president’s memoirs, In the line of fire, are serialised in UK daily The Times.

The court rules there are sufficient reasons for the indictment of four Latin American men

Tourist figures
The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association laments yet another drop in tourist figures as indicative statistics for September and October show a further drop of another 20,000 visitors on last year’s figures by the end of October.

Thursday, 28 September
Unchanged interest rates
The Central Bank leaves the central intervention rate unchanged at 3.5 per cent but the governor warns of a possible reappraisal of the bank’s monetary policy stance in the near term.

Vandals strike
Vandals break into the Abbatija tad-Dejr catacombs in Rabat and spray black graffiti, which luckily was only sprayed on concrete bricks forming part of the access gate and not on the archaeological site itself.

Friday, 29 September
Board resigns
The entire board of directors at the Malta Tourism Authority except for chairman Sam Mifsud, resigns over the press leak probe. Tourism Minister Zammit Dimech accepts their resignation.

Air Malta losses
Air Malta posts an operational loss of Lm6.3 million for the year ending March 2006, primarily caused by an exorbitant increase in the price of fuel.

Saturday, 30 September
Illegal hunting
Birdlife Malta calls upon the Police Commissioner to enforce the bird protection laws in the wake of rampant illegal hunting throughout Malta and Gozo.

Labour employment plan
The Labour Party launches another policy document for discussion, targeting workers’ rights and conditions.
