Funny kind of sovereignty!

The Maltese government and Ryanair have reached agreement in order that Ryanair can start operating to Malta at the end of October this year.
There is just one hitch. This agreement is subject to approval by the European Union! Which means that if the EU is not happy with the agreement reached, and finds that something in that agreement is not in line with the EU’s strict guidelines on financing of airports and start-up aid to airlines, the government–Ryanair agreement would have to be changed according to the guidelines imposed by the EU. And if Ryanair is not willing to accept such changes, the agreement could be scuppered. There would not have been any risk of this happening had we remained a truly sovereign country!
If I remember correctly, prior to the referendum we used to be told by the EU “dreamers” that EU membership “will strengthen Malta’s sovereignty”. Is this what they had in mind, that the EU will always have the final say? A funny kind of sovereignty to my mind!
