It’s official, government takes over local enforcement

Government has officially taken control over local enforcement, when last Tuesday it set up a Local Enforcement System committee, that will from now on draw up and implement a general policy regarding the local enforcement of any law, regulation or by-law.
As anticipated by MaltaToday last month, government now has the tools to tackle widespread disgruntlement on local council enforcement through wardens, speed cameras and other measures.
The new committee set up by government, will now have two representatives from the general public in its set-up, and will operate to ensure that whatever local enforcement is in place will be in conformity with the law that regulates the local wardens and their operators.
The committee has been given the authority to set up a disciplinary board which shall have the power to remove from service, local wardens and private guards and the operator where necessary.
The Legal Notice obliges all local councils to refer all matters relating to enforcement, including the deploying of wardens, the penalties, setting up of speed cameras and all other enforcement matters, to be forwarded to the new committee who in turn will decide over the proposal.
Speaking to MaltaToday, Parliamentary Secretary Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici said that the legal notice “puts the house in order for the benefit of all citizens”.
