Gzira hotels propose lido for promenade

James Debono

Strolling down the Gzira promenade from Manoel Island down to Sliema will be a completely different experience for the families who crowd the area in the summer if an application to widen the entire Gzira promenade and construct a lido is given the green light by the planning authority.
The project is being proposed by the four hotels facing the Gzira promenade – the Kennedy Nova, the Bay View, the Waterfront and the Milano Due Hotels, all of which lack access to the seaside.
According to Michael Stivala, the managing director of Bay View Hotel, the development is set to take place entirely on land reclaimed from the sea. The proposed lido will consist of a large swimming pool accompanied by a cafeteria and gazebos.
Two pontoons for boats as well as an inlet sheltered by a breakwater are also being proposed in plans submitted to MEPA.
The project has the support of the Gzira local council. Mayor Albert Rizzo said the developers have guaranteed that all parts of the project will be accessible to the public.
The council has also teamed up with the hoteliers in a bid to get EU funding for the embellishment part of the project. Speaking to MaltaToday, Michael Stivala said the project will be accompanied by the embellishment of the front in a bid to upgrade the Gzira front in view of the Manoel Island project.
