Public transport commuters have decreased by 2.85% since 2000, despite increasing fuel costs and heftier duties on private vehicles such as Japanese imports.
In six years, public transport commuters have been decreasing gradually except for a brief increase between 2004 and 2005.
Despite the increase in fuel costs and more expensive cars, there are less commuters using public transport today than in 2000.
Although public transport was hit by a three-day strike which resulted in a loss of over 196,000 passengers, the resultant figure would still have been lower than six years ago.
But the addition of new routes from villages to the University of Malta managed to increase public transport users from 122,851 to 261,648 this year – effectively displacing the double trips taken by students to and from Valletta bus terminus.
Revenue for public transport on the other hand, has been increasing, reaching Lm6.5 million this year, over the Lm5.3m registered in 2001.
