You don’t need a big embassy to spy on us, says Leo Brincat

Every embassy has its spies – that is one way of interpreting Labour MP Leo Brincat’s budget speech made in Parliament last Monday when he said the United States did not need a bigger embassy to spy in Malta.
Observers in diplomatic circles raised an eyebrow at the statement made by the Shadow Minister on Foreign Affairs and IT.
“It was slightly undiplomatic, though not totally untrue,” a senior diplomat said.
“I wasn’t talking about any embassy in particular,” Brincat clarified when contacted. “What I said was in the context of Labour’s agreement on the sale of the Ta’ Qali land to the US for a bigger embassy. I said that with the technology available, one doesn’t need a big embassy to eavesdrop on anyone.”
