The MLP has led the PN in eight out of ten surveys held by MaltaToday during the past year, with the PN only surpassing the MLP in December last year following the anti-CHOGM protest organised by the General Workers Union and in May.
In the past year support for the MLP has never fallen below the 26 per cent mark reaching a high of 33 per cent in November.
On the other hand support for the PN had reached an ebb of 21 per cent in September – following a long hot summer characterised by scandals, environmental protests and disenchantment. Between May and September the PN lost 12 points.
Yet, spurred on by Lawrence Gonzi’s rallying call on Independence Day the party started recovering ground during the autumn to reach a peak after the budget. The party managed to gain seven points between September and November.
Support for the Greens has shifted between a high 6.6 per cent in September and a low 2.7 per cent after last month’s budget. AD seems to have been the greatest casualty of last month’s budget aimed at appeasing the middle classes.
Interestingly the number of those who would not vote in a forthcoming election dropped sharply to 13 per cent when the PN reached a 33 per cent peak in May and reached a peak in September when the PN was at its lowest ebb. Following the budget the number of non-voters decreased to 17.2 per cent.
The number of undecided voters has shifted between 14 per cent in April and 30 per cent in July.
