Subsidising Ryanair out of our taxes

Mr Ian Decesare (Sensible business, not neo-colonialism, Sunday 12 November) writes “Your readers should be aware that the government is not directly subsidising Ryanair”.
The Prime Minister, in his 2007 budget speech, says “earlier this year we took the first steps and introduced schemes to attract a low-cost airline other than those already operating here. At this point it is pertinent to point out that these schemes will cost the government more than Lm1 million. I am saying this to explain to everyone that the price of a low-cost airline ticket is cheap because we are all paying part of it.”
That is, the reality is that the government is writing a cheque, out of our taxes, to Ryanair. Your readers can judge for themselves of the above statements is closer to the truth.
