Dumping chaos

The picture in MaltaToday (10 December 2006, “Where batteries come to rest”) must be the worst photo depicting the dumping of items no longer usable. Can anyone ask what happens to fridges, washing machines, gas and electric cookers and where they are being dumped? Like the batteries, these will have to be disposed of once again at a cost to the government.
The EU has laws against the dumping of batteries and the government will be in for a hefty fine, and then it will cost them again to remove them. In England, under EU laws, dead car batteries are taken to the garage where you get one pound off your new battery when the old one is handed in, which is later sent away for recycling and returned as a new battery.
