May I congratulate you on the coverage in your paper of the scandalous and humiliating report on animal welfare and slaughter by the Austrian experts, written by Karl Schembri.
I note that the ministry is now assuring you that steps are being taken to put things right.
However, it is only fair to the public to reveal the following relevant points:
1 - As Opposition Spokesperson I have been exposing the shortcomings of the abattoir and much of the other ministerial administration since 2004 by putting Parliamentary Questions to Minister Pullicino and Prime Minister Gonzi. My allegations have been rudely and arrogantly denied and dismissed in their answers.
2 - During 2004 and 2005 I have written several letters and/or opinions in newspapers about the disgraceful situation at the abattoir, but my disclosures have been arrogantly and disrespectfully dismissed by various PR minions of the ministry, who have even boasted of the amounts of the taxpayers hard earned cash which were being spent to bring the service up to state of the art EU standards.
3 - The date of the report was August 2006, it is now January 2007, why has it taken so long to take action?
These comments are highly relevant because they emphasise the disease of arrogant incompetence which is destroying the ministry from within under Minister Pullicino.
When is Prime Minister Gonzi going to recognise his responsibilities of leadership and insist on the resignation of this minister in the best interests of agriculture, food production and the people?
