Silent over China abuse

The few lines in Saviour Balzan’s opinion column (25 February) about the apparent conspiracy of silence on mainland China’s human rights violations were very much to the point.
While the mass media the world over get at the US over its policies, which have not involved the annexation of other countries, they keep absolute mum over China’s annexation of peaceful and non-nuclear Tibet.
So, too, mainland China’s government coercion on citizens who want a free choice as regards religious adherence finds few advocates locally. Is it not paradoxical, that while China is keen to supply consumers everywhere with as wide and inexpensive a choice as possible, it denies its citizens the choice of adhering to any but its state sponsored religious organizations? And subjugates millions of its own citizens through the operation of concentration camps for the rank and file, and house arrests, restrictions on travel and various sanctions to those beyond China’s confines?
Why, too, is there no free vote in mainland China, but rather a one-party system maintained through the use of force, as we witnessed years back in in Tienanmen Square, Beijing, where tanks mowed down idealistic young people and adults?
At a time where business ethics and corporate social responsibility are so emphasised, mainland China comes at the very bottom of this league table.
